Separation from body

After chewing a quid for about 20 minutes with only a mild "S" result, I took a hit through a water pipe (bong).

I took one hit, lungs full of smoke, and got a coughing fit. I took a second hit, held it for about 10 seconds and let it go.

It took about 10 seconds for the hit to take effect.

Another 10 seconds went by where I was detached from my body but didn't realize it. I finally did realize it and was suddenly concerned.

I felt as if I was a soul, detached from my body and suddenly aware that the physical world is of no consequence. The feeling was familiar, and at the same time I was aware that this is how it would feel to die.

Physically, it seemed that I was being pulled somewhere against my will.

I had what seemed to be an epiphany, where I realized I wasn't my physical self -- that the physical self was both absurd and unimportant. I felt that the immortal soul was the real self; I also had a sense of dread associated with this.

I tried several times to bring myself back, so to speak, and was able to do so only for a few seconds before being pulled back to wherever my awareness was going.

I finally felt in control enough to fix my gaze on a picture of my family and, after drifting away another couple times, finally was able to stay grounded in the 'here and now'.

This was my first experience and it was unpleasant.

I tried another identical hit a couple hours later with no result.

I too got the distinct sensation that I am not my body, which is an amazing but perplexing idea. What really gets me going is wondering how I can remember being outside my head when everything that records and documents my experiences is inside my head. I mean, with what eye did I see myself? What brain recalls what it saw?

Seems like you had a pretty revelatory experience. To sense oneself as separate from the body, it would seem is not a demented quirk, but a genuine sensing of the nature of our circumstance as perceivers. I've had similar experiences, although probably not as frightening.

I felt that the immortal soul was the real self" -- that does sound like an epiphany. This seems to be one of the real benefits of salvia--that it allows us to witness perceptions like this.

Seems like you got off with a bang, for the first time. I wouldn't be afraid to use lesser strength extracts -- maybe one or two bowls of leaf, or one bowl of 5X to get to know the subtleties of the trance.
